Good morning Consumers. This is Please Consume, the Film newsletter that loves you more than Ben Affleck loves being from Boston.

Flashdance (1983)

Closing out Wet Cinema Week we had to come up with the definitive moment in Wet Cinema. The scene that defines moistness on screen.
We had many contenders.
Lilo and Stitch’s opening wave sequence? No good, it's not real water.
Avatar: The Way of Water going into the ocean for the first time would’ve made the list had the film switched from 24fps to 60fps but unfortunately the whole film is in 60fps.
Gene Kelly doing Singing in the Rain in Singing in the Rain? No way Jose, it’s a great moment in a film full of great moments.
No, we're talking about a movie that will exclusively be remembered for its water antics.
Which is why we’ve gotta go with Flashdance.

Pure Vibes… Dude.

Flashdance is about as shallow a film that has ever been made, but that’s where all of its charm comes in. It has such infectious fun energy that makes you just want to run after your dreams and seize the day in a way that only dancing can.
This film is a dance picture through and through, this sort of postmodern approach to musicals, where the film is a conduit for crazy dance numbers.
When you watch it you get a wave of 80s MTV music video nostalgia flowing through you. It also revitalized the dance craze leading to classics like Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and Breakin’.
When you watch this film you simply have no choice but to wipe the plot from your mind entirely. If you don’t, you'll be screaming at the screen the entire time, telling these beautiful idiots what they could do to make their lives at least reflect a minor character arc.
Also, #JusticeForRichie, he gets such a bum deal in this film.
Wettest of Wet Award in Wetness

Let me ask you this: what do you remember about Flashdance? And if you’ve never seen Flashdance, what do you know about it?
Is it Adrian Lyne’s music video style on full display? Is it the “subtle” performances? Is it for the greatest comeback in cinematic history?:
Katie Hurley:
Has he taken you to the steel mill yet?
Nick:
That's enough, Katie.
Katie Hurley:
He likes to go there on his first date. It was your first date, wasn't it?
Alex Owens:
Yeah, it was. As a matter of fact, I fucked his brains out.
Or do you just remember the part with the water dump and the fact she has the largest eyes in the history of non-anime cinema?
We don’t blame you, it’s a great moment and it does a great job of announcing the film as what it is. An absolute blast with gorgeous (Oscar-nominated) cinematography!
We love Flashdance for all of its charm and pure 80s-ness and we hope you do too.
