BANG-A-RANG!
Hook. Hook. Captain Hook. Hook. Hook. Captain Hook.

Good morning Consumers, This is please consume, film newsletter that double butters your popcorn.

Mr. Willy Wonka means quite a bit to me.
The 1970’s Gene Wilder version of the film is the first movie I remember watching.
While the Wonka brand is back in the zeitgeist for the holiday season, we want to talk about some tasty treats…
Hook (1991)

For my entry, I wanted to take a look at a scene that has been seared into my heart from the age of 6. It's my favorite food fight scene in a movie.
Let's get into it…
Hook. Hook. Captain Hook.
Hook. Hook. Captain Hook.
BANG-A-RANG!
Call me crazy but I think this is BY FAR the best Peter Pan adaptation. Not every person shares this opinion with me. In fact the great Roger Ebert had this to say about it
"A lugubrious retread of a once-magical idea.”
Love you Rog, but I couldn't disagree more. Ebert missed out on the massive wave of remakes and reboots that we have to deal with here in the Year of our Lord 2023, so maybe I’m a bit biased, but Hook feels like a wholly creative idea, spun by a master storyteller.
The stellar cast of Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, and Julia Roberts, the John Williams score, and the A++ directing from Speilberg all add up to not only a Peter Pan story that I'm happy was told, but one that needs to be.
FOOD FIGHT!
I’m not sure if this food is sweet.
I’m going to assume it is, otherwise I have no reason to be writing about this wonderful film.
In fact, I found this little nugget where the actor Dante Basco (He plays Rufio) says the colorful blocks that they are throwing at each other were made with cool whip and frosting.
Seriously, these kids are living a dream that I've had before: having Robin Williams throw frosting at me while Speilberg screams “ Action!”.
But it is not just the neon fluff being thrown that makes this scene so great. If you remember, it's a recurring theme that Peter (Williams) cannot see the food that the lost boys have been chowing down on.
Spielberg is so so so good at this. He makes you wait for it.
The moment when grumpy old Peter realizes that he is the great Peter Pan is so magical. If you’ve seen the film, and love it as much as I do, you may get chills thinking about it.
It truly is a sweet scene.
