Debra Grannick is an indie filmmaker who possesses a superpower that very few people have: the eagle-like ability to spot a movie star thirty miles away. Every movie she has directed has starred an actress right before their big break. Her debut, “Down to the Bone”, featured a pre “Up in the Air” Vera Farmiga, her sophomore effort, “Winter's Bone”, launched Jennifer Lawrence's career, and today’s film was the introduction of up-and-comer Thomasin Mckenzie.
Another power is her skill to smoothly integrating her undying beliefs into all of her films. From her constant use of the American flag to represent the US at its best and worst (depending on the context), to the importance she places on our connection to nature and her insistence that you are living a worse life if you live in one of those gross, stinky cities. And, much like the Wachowskis, she emphasizes the importance of community.
Today’s clip is an insanely good example of how our two leads approach community.
Mckenzie is open and loving to the bees while the fantastic Ben Foster, keeping his own walls up, is able to appreciate her love for the creatures.
This movie is amazing and has never failed to make 100% of its audience cry by the time the credits roll.
