Happy New Year.

This week we’re starting with a big one that needs a lot of contexts.
This is an Indian film from this year that is a completely fictional work.
It’s about two real Indian revolutionaries in the 1920s who never actually met. In this film not only do they meet… They become the greatest BFFs who ever lived.
While you may not have heard of this movie, please understand, it’s a big deal!
It’s a smash box office success starring two of India’s biggest stars: Ram Charan and N. T. Rama Rao Jr.
Also, it’s directed by one of their biggest filmmakers right now, SS Rajamouli.
Imagine Will Smith and Tom Cruise coming together for a historical epic directed by John Wu in 1999.
It’d be fucking massive!
The next piece of context you’ll want is the genre that RRR is playing in. This film comes out of a genre in India called “masala”.
Masala is a Hindi word meaning a spice mixture ground into a paste or powder.
In film terms it is a movie that blends genres; so masala films are action, comedy, romance, drama, and musical hybrids. They are also fun as hell!
There is one final piece of context you’ll need for this scene specifically.
In this clip, our two heroes are at a tea party thrown by the British colonizers who have taken over their country. While at this party, they are victims of a lot of racism and bigotry. So what do our protagonists do?
They show up all these brits with their dance skills!
This song was an absolute phenomenon in India. People learned the dance, made tiktoks of them doing it, and would perform the dance IN THE THEATER!
With all that out of the way, please enjoy the first of five great scenes this week starting with RRR!
