What a year it has been.
We had indie darlings and international films that broke into the mainstream. For the first time since the pandemic, we saw the blockbuster return in a big way.
Just in time.
As we all know, theatres are hurting in a bad way.

How to describe The Northman?
It’s not sweet, beautiful, glamorous, or even particularly inviting to its audience.
So what is it?
Brutal, unflinching, and simultaneously both objective in the way it’s made, and introspective on the basis of where we come from.
Let’s talk about this scene specifically, as it has weirdly taken some flack. People say it’s too slow or too flashy with its long-take style. Right now we are going to address both of those valid, if not slightly surface-level complaints.
Firstly, that it’s “too slow”...This movie is not John Wick.
It’s not about badass assassins using their skills to efficiently take out their enemies.
This movie is about brutality.
This scene is meant to show these men as what they are, lumbering blunt objects who take what they want because they feel entitled to it. Survival of the fittest.
Now for the complaint that it is “too flashy”.
Many feel the one-shot look is outdated and overdone and feels out of place in the movie.
We tend to disagree.
The scene is all shot in a wide so you can get an idea of the scope and shot in one take. Helping better immerse you in this scene, to make you feel like you are in the town with them. If it takes you out, that is more than fair.
For our money, this scene keeps us on the edge of our seats.
