If a film loses a metric shit ton of money at the box office, does that make it a bad movie?

Hell no.

We are not here to dunk on films that couldn't bring in the benjamins.

In fact, we want to lift some movies up and say “ What were people thinking!?”

Here are our picks for some of the best box office bombs of all time.

BUDGET: $70,000,000 EARNINGS: $8,000,000 TOTAL LOSS: 78-103 million (est)

Oh ya, we’re doing Blackhat!

The film’s director, Michael Mann, has had a fascinating arc of a career, starting with well-received thrillers like “Thief” and “Manhunter” then taking five years off of directing to oversee “Miami Vice”, on which, strangely enough, even though he was the showrunner and an acclaimed filmmaker, he never directed a single episode.

Post Vice, though, he came back for the biggest film of his career, “Last of the Mohicans”, then continued forward with films like “Heat”, “Collateral”, and “Ali”.

While Mann has made a lot of big movies star-driven movies, they’ve never done particularly well.

Critics liked “Heat” when it came out and audiences enjoyed it well enough, but to call it the smash success it is now is somewhat deceptive. This is the case for many of his films; “Ali” was a hit but basically nonexistent when Oscar season came around and “Public Enemies”, a 2009 Johnny Depp movie, was roundly rejected by critics and audiences.

The whole point is that it actually isn’t as surprising as it may seem on the surface that a star-driven vehicle made by one of our most important auteur filmmakers would do as poorly as it did.

Nevertheless, it is a shame that it did so poorly, considering it’s a fantastic and gripping movie about what paranoia looks like in the modern era.

It’s no longer Dr. Evil getting on television and demanding a million dollars or else he’ll shoot a laser. No, this is anonymous echo terrorists who can shut down the entire world given enough time in front of a keyboard.

Blackhat is currently streaming on Netflix and we encourage you to check it out, but for now, here is just a taste.
