I can’t really explain why this is one of my favorite Coen brother’s films, but it’s just so good.

Oscar Isaac, in his breakout role, plays a musician suffering from cyclical failure. Inside Llewyn Davis is shot by Bruno Delbonnel, ASC, AFC, purposely eschewing clarity and resolution for a milky, desaturated image.

I remember watching an interview with Delbonnel saying he purposely worked away from the clinical look of digital, even though this was shot on film, which was becoming more common at the time.

This clip starts, appropriately, with the beginning of a song sung by Llewyn and his late partner. The soundtrack in this movie is arranged so that it creates an entire documentary through music.

Both the soundtrack and the plot work in tandem to create a film that is relatable, saddening, and beautiful.
