Ding Ding.

Creed (2015)

We are doing this week to honor John Wick: Chapter 4.

But we figured we’d make a quick pit stop at Michael B. Jordan’s pecks in honor of his directorial debut in Creed 3.

As much as we love Sylvester Stallone and the Rocky franchise we understand the complaint that Creed is just “repeating” what the original already did.

you have to admit there’s something special about these movies, particularly this one.

None of the Rocky films have ever gotten our adrenaline pumping as hard as this film does. It reflects the sheer charismatic force of it’s director and star.

Directing

Ryan Coogler is one of the most exciting young filmmakers working today.

While sometimes we worry he has fallen victim to the Marvel machine, this film and scene are a reminder of what a skilled and electric filmmaker Coogler is when he gets to flex his own muscles.

Something that stands out is his choice of color which he uses to constantly drive our focus towards the fighters' boxing gloves, as opposed to what the audience behind them is doing (something Eastwood struggles with in Million Dollar Baby).

Blocking

Let’s get familiar with what it even means to block a shot:

“Blocking is the precise staging of actors to facilitate the performance of a play, ballet, film or opera.”

So within the context of this scene, that means where our actors are placed inside of the ring and their relation to the camera.

Keep in mind that this scene was actually done in one take.

No hidden cuts.

Over the course of a 15-hour day, doing the scene 13 times.

Take a second to place yourself in those shoes. When filming a scene you always want your movements to feel as natural as possible, plus you can always fall back on the editor to make you look good and piece together the best part of every take.

Now take that safety net away.

Factor in that you’re boxing and actually getting hit in the face and contending with a large cinema camera moving around you at all times; the difference between success and failure is razor-thin.

It is mind-boggling to think about the blocking that goes into a scene like this, but dammit if the results don’t speak for themselves.

Half-Baked Research

Speaking of crazy stunts…

Did MBJ get knocked out during this film??

According to Sly Stallone, he did.

You be the judge.
