Sunday School Musical (2008)

We all know and love High School Musical.

It’s easily the best of the Disney Channel TV movies to come out of the 2000s and the most commercially successful as well. HSM became the highest-viewed premiere for Disney Channel at the time and the fastest-selling TV movie in DVD sales.

But beyond that, it’s a beloved series that contains so much nostalgia for people who were kids and teenagers at the time.

It also launched the career of Zach Efron who hasn’t done much except look incredibly handsome, something I will never complain about.

This film premiered just a few days before the release of High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

So… you tell me what that means.

It’s the same basic romantic plot as HSM, except the story follows a high schooler, named Zachary, who is the star of the local church choir. When the church is threatened to close due to financial trouble, Zachary and company enter a song and dance competition to win the prize money.

Seems innocent enough, but the filmmakers made one major mistake:

The sound design SUCKS.

The singing portions are fine, although the lyrics are abysmal and it’s obvious most of it is lip-syncing.

But the moments without singing are somehow the worst part.

There are claps without sound, clapping sounds without the action, some moments are inexplicably mute, and sometimes the audio doesn’t line up with a character’s mouth!

Plus, none of it actually takes place in a Sunday school.
