All eyes on me.

It’s time to talk about one of my all-time favorite films.

Good morning Consumers, This is Please Consume, the newsletter that loves movies more than Leo loves girls born between the years 2002 - 2005.

We have hit an interesting time in pop culture. The “Concert” film has made its way to the center of film over the last few weeks.

We thought it would be a perfect time to discuss our favorite music films.

Not necessarily musicals, Movies where the center of the film is the music.

So let's get into Music Week!

Inside (2021)

Written by Christian Boyd

It’s time to talk about one of my all-time favorite films.

Inside quite literally changed my life, which is wild to say about a movie that came out less than 3 years ago, but I can assure you that without this movie my life would have looked different.

Its themes about anxiety ignited something within me to explore myself more. That road led me to spend the next 18 months in weekly counseling sessions.

It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. It changed me forever.

That’s what great art has the ability to do. Affect us so deeply that the ideas and themes stick with us enough to actually inspire change in the real world.

So before we get started I would like to say thank you to Bo.

Your honesty and vulnerability that you put on screen inspired me to change and face my fears.

My hope is that you one day get to know the impact you have made.

Now onto why I love this film…

It’s a movie

Let’s be clear. This is a movie.

I’ve heard the argument that it’s just a comedy special. In my opinion, that argument is just flat-out wrong.

I'm not going to get into the semantics of what is and isn't a movie, but for the sake of this writing, I will suggest that in film we typically look at themes, story, cinematography and performances.

Let’s touch briefly on each of these categories.

Themes:

Anxiety, technology, and need for attention.

Story:

A man is now confined to being inside his home and he must face his fears of anxiety, technology, and need for attention as he slowly slips into madness.

Cinematography:

I don't even think I have to argue this point, just watch 20 minutes of this film and you’ll see it's one of the most creatively shot films in the last decade.

Performance:

Bo gives us a one-man show that is on par with the likes of Cast Away, Gravity, Locke, and Moon. While the rest of these actors in the films I just listed are some of the most seasoned in their generation, Bo manages to do this on his first shot.

Yes, Bo Burnam is a standup comedian. But to boil this down to a “Netflix Special” is just lazy.

He is a full-blown filmmaker. And Inside is a damn masterpiece.
