Pig (2022)

Who else thought this film would be John Wick with a pig?

While that would have been pretty awesome, that’s not the actual premise.

And it’s all the better for it.

Nobody expected Pig to be the kind of movie that it is and that’s part of its beauty. It’s a film that revels in its authenticity, the kind of self-awareness that not only draws the viewer into the story, but turns their gaze at themselves.

Expectations

What makes Pig such a wonderful film is that it’s a subversion of all the elements that the audience expects.

As noted before, this film seemed to be something along the lines of a revenge thriller to reclaim a pig.

This makes sense because of the success of the John Wick movies in which the entirety of the plot is sparked by the loss of a dog. It also boasts Nic Cage, whose name is almost synonymous with the action film.

While, yes, Cage does embark on a journey to find his stolen pig, the film is less about vengeance and more about reclaiming one’s true self.

This means lots of brutal, harsh moments that are the result of… honesty.

Except for one scene, this is a non-violent movie. As Cage makes his way through the culinary underworld of Portland, he leaves behind a trail of destruction caused only by his sincerity.

This all leads to, in my opinion, one of the most surprising and moving endings in the past decade.

Performance

Cage is magnificent.

Just like the film itself, his character is a subversion of the Cage persona.

His character, Robin, is quiet and brokenhearted. The mysterious loss of a woman has driven him into the woods where he passes his days hunting for truffles with his pig and cooking

When his pig is stolen, there is no crazed Cage breakdown. No menacing line given with a strange accent.

There is just sadness. And a love that drives him out of his solitude and into Portland in order to find his friend.
