This is one of my dad’s favorite films, and so it has a personal connection for me (paralleling the plot’s focus on a father/son relationship).

The film’s cinematographer, Robby Muller, was known for pushing boundaries and using uncorrected light fixtures, achieving a powerful emotional result.

The strong use of color nicely contrasts Harry Dean Stanton’s staid character.

This particular scene does what only really effective scenes do, which is to take a three-dimensional space, omit details irrelevant to the story, and create a dynamic two-dimensional image that engages the emotions of the characters.
