To close out this week, we want to cast our gaze to the future, and we believe that Nia DaCosta is the future, not just of women in Hollywood, but the industry itself. Along with her contemporaries such as Charlotte Wells, Carlos Lopez Estrada, the Safdies, Ryan Coogler, Alice Diop, and Damien Chazelle, we are so excited to be in such capable, artistic hands!
DaCosta has her finger on the pulse of current issues, a strong voice, an absurdly sharp eye for aesthetics, and can work in a myriad of genres from crime films with “Little Woods” to this vibrant horror film. She even has an upcoming superhero sequel titled “Marvels”. With such an array of impressive work under her belt, DaCosta has announced herself as an important artist to watch out for.
As you watch this clip, pay attention to the masterful control she has over tone and the way she is able to call back to the original film while firmly planting this in the modern era.
Also, feel free to get mad at the fact she was only 29 when she made this movie.
Nia, we can’t wait to see what’s next for you!

Did we bring it today? |
