M. Night Shyamalan Week: Day 4

There’s no doubt that our boy M. Night Shyamalan has a mixed bag of films.

When he sets out to make a film, one of two things happens:

He hits

or

strikes out at the plate.

But when he hits it’s not just an RBI. It's an absolute dinger outside-the-park home run that your grandpa talks about for 50 years.

And with the release of Knock at the Cabin Door it gives us the perfect opportunity to discuss the king of the twist.

We want to talk about those. Because that is way more fun.

Shyamalan’s BACK BABY!

After the success of “The Visit”, M. Night looked to the future and made one of his most critically successful films to date!

But more than all of that, let’s just dig into this scene for a while because it’s one of the densest of his career.

The basic concept of Split, for those Consumers who don’t remember, is that isolated teenager, Casey, played by the always fantastic Anya Taylor-Joy, is kidnapped by the equally fantastic James Mcavoy in one of his best roles to date.

McAvoy plays a man with multiple personalities, twenty-three to be exact, who captures Casey in order for her to help him “complete the ritual”.

Her goal: to escape at any cost before this mystery ritual is completed.

In this scene, Casey is taken to the room of Hedwig, the youngest of McAvoy’s personalities, where he tries to impress her with a dance set to Snail’s “Frogbass” that McAvoy actually choreographed himself.

It acts as a sort of serenade over Casey as the song repeats the words “I need you” and Hedwig interprets a man dying and reincarnating as a zombie through his dance.

Essentially, Hedwig is telling Casey he needs her so he can complete the ritual and reincarnate as something new himself.

The scene is bizarre, creepy, bold as hell, and we absolutely love it!
