What is an ocean but a multitude of drops?

We know we just did Wachowskies but come on, how could we resist such incredible and enigmatic filmmakers!

We know we just did Wachowskies but come on, how could we resist such incredible and enigmatic filmmakers!

Plus Wachowskis present such a compelling and wonderfully unique place within the film industry as both the only mainstream trans filmmakers working in the industry right now and one of the few sister duos in Hollywood, You have plenty of brothers from Ceon to Russo but as far as we can tell in terms of sister duos it's this or the Twisted Twins, and rather than doing a writeup for "Dead Hooker in the Trunk" we opted for this brilliant work of art.

The focus of this film reflects the focus of this day, the sisters', and their most common central theme as this is a film that discusses the feeling of not fitting in your own skin and the interconnected nature of humanity.

Let's start with the feeling of otherness.

The Wachowskis are both trans women who made the public aware of the transition after having several films under their belts. That does not mean, however, that their views of gender identity and support of the LGBTQIAP+ community weren't always in their movies, In the original script for the Matrix, Lilly told the BBC quote

"We had the character of Switch - who was a character who

would be a man in the real world and then a woman in the Matrix." And let us not forget about their debut a queer thriller found in "Bound." Cloud Atlas lays with these same themes, from having one of it's six story lines feature a gay man whisked away from his lover for a period, to the whole structure of the film being centered around actors playing with identity with many actors playing multiple roles representing different social classes, different genders, and (controversially) different races.

The second piece to the Wachowskis is an aspect of their creative signature which we discussed in Speed Racer as well; THEY. LOVE. FAMILY. And when we say that we mean they love everybody as if they are family. They believe we can exist together in harmony. Few parts of the film encapsulate this as well as the opening cut across thousands of years showing revolutions, people moving the needle forward, and individuals trying to create a difference to make a better world.

As the title of this email alludes, this film strives to show us that even though we may not feel like we are creating a better world in the moment, our true contributions are not always immediately apparent. Maybe we're helping in small ways, in ways that we cannot necessarily see, or that seem inconsequential to others. Maybe we feel that at the end of the day it all amounts to just a drop in the bucket, BUT
