ROM-COM WEEK: Day 5

Love is in the air.

And for all you horny consumers, this is the week for you!

We’ll be taking a look at some of the best scenes in Rom-Com History.

This can be a touchy subject, as everyone has their favorites from the genre.

So, if you have a problem with any of our picks, just remember: this week is all about love, not hate!

For our final movie this week, we couldn’t not talk about the rom-com to end all rom-com; the movie that revitalized and ended a genre in one orgasm… er… breath. In doing so, we want to talk about the relationships of those who challenge one another.

What can we say about today’s scene that hasn’t already been said; it’s the embodiment of ICONIC!

This film came to fruition soon after director Rob Reiner’s divorce from his first wife, Penny Marshall.

He decided he wanted to make a film about the relationship between men and women but felt he was in too raw of a place to make an honest work that represented both sides fairly.

So, he went to writer Nora Ephron and she produced the beautiful screenplay we have today.

As she wrote, Ephron knew she wanted to have a frank discussion about the female orgasm such as she had never seen before. With the help of Reiner, who pitched her the scene, and Billy Crystal, who added the incredibly ubiquitous punchline that we love so much, she created one of the most recognizable moments in rom-com history.

What makes this scene, and the film as a whole, work, more than the hilarious performance by Meg Ryan or the brilliant reaction by Crystal, or, of course, that incredible punchline performed by Reiner’s actual mother, is that Harry and Sally are two people who are not just connected by attraction, but by intelligence.

They have better conversations with each other than with anybody else in their lives. They love each other for who they are as people.

For over thirty years, When Harry Met Sally has been the pinnacle of romantic comedies, and will continue to be cherished for as long as we can believe in love.

It’s a movie that has been beloved for the last thirty-four years and will continue to be loved for as long as we can continue to believe in love

FUN FACT: Remember when we said Reiner got divorced while writing this movie? Well, star Billy Crystal introduced him to the true love of his life while shooting this film, and they’ve been together ever since.
